Marion County Relay for Life
"Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated"
I am the Marion County Relay for Life Grand Marshal for 2003!
People often ask what they can do to help. I think everyone should get involved in some way, to help fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society has an event called the Relay for Life, which is held in many cities across America.
The Relay for Life is people who form teams from their families, churches, hospitals, schools, businesses, service organizations or other groups. The teams have fundraising events and collect pledges and then walk on a track for 24 hours. There is a survivors victory lap and a luminaria ceremony to honor those who have been affected by cancer.
I really enjoy the Relay for Life. It is a fun event with lots of nice people and fun things to do. There is music and games and good food too. I am on the Salem Kiwanis Relay for Life team, just like last year. My Mama Loni is the Kiwanis team captain this year. I like camping out overnight at the track where the Relay for Life is held.
I am the Grand Marshal for the Marion County Relay for Life in 2003. I'm really proud of that. I like helping however I can. I feel bad because the other Grand Marshall was Chris Holt, also of Keizer, Oregon. Chris died last January from Leukemia, so his brother Brian is going to be Grand Marshal with me at the Relay for Life. If I'm feeling well enough, I'll be there for the whole 24 hours.
You can get more information about Relay for Life by calling the American Cancer Society locally in Eugene, Oregon 503-581-4577 or the National office at 1-800-ACS-2345. You can also click here for more information about the American Cancer Society or click here for more about Relay for Life.
The 2003 Relay for Life in Marion County is on June 13th, starting at 12:00 noon and continues until June 14th at noon. Relay for Life is being held at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. Please join us, help raise money for the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer and honor cancer survivors and victims. Please say hi to me while you're there!
If you can't walk or participate in Relay for Life, you can contact my Mama Loni to support the Salem Kiwanis team and make a tax deductible contribution to the American Cancer Society.
